More places to visit in Jean Lafitte NHP
Did you know that the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve has six areas, and each is unique? Make sure to check out other areas of the park before/after your swamp tour!
At least three of these areas are easily accessible on your trip to New Orleans, including:
The Barataria Preserve is only 3 miles (four minutes) from the swamp tour. It has several hiking trails and a visitor center (closed Monday & Tuesday) to explore the hardwood forest, swamp, bayous, and the marshes of the Louisiana wetlands. The visitor center has films and exhibits that explain the unique habitat and the challenges they face.
The French Quarter Visitor Center is a great place to learn the history and culture of New Orleans, just a few blocks from Jackson Square in the French Quarter of New Orleans!
The Chalmette Battlefield and Cemetery is a half hour from the Jean Lafitte Swamp Tour and 6 miles (12 minutes)from Jackson Square in New Orleans. It is the site of the Battle of New Orleans in 1815, which many people believe to be the last great battle in the War of 1812 between the U.S. and Britain.
Today, you can walk the grounds, see the reconstructed American Rampart (a defensive wall), an 1830s house, the 100-foot high Chalmette Monument, a visitor center, and several outdoor exhibits for self-guided tours. You can also visit the Chalmette National Cemetary, which was established during the Civil War.

Park Ranger John's Pro Tip
If you don't have a car or are staying in the French Quarter, you can get tickets and take the Paddlewheeler Creole Queen Historic Mississippi River Cruise.
This tour leaves at the end of Canal Street and the Mississippi River. You board the Creole Queen and travel down the Mississippi River with a licensed historian giving illuminating narration. You learn about the Battle of New Orleans and stop at the Chalmette Battlefield for one hour.
