    📍Tours
🐻 Save time! Buy your National Park Pass before your trip

Grand Bay National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1992 to help protect the once widespread wet pine savanna habitat. Today, this habitat has been reduced by 97% and is a key habitat for species like the Mississippi Sandhill Crane, with only approximately 200 birds in existence today.

The wet pine savanna is a biodiverse hotspot and supports native plants such as wiregrass and the white-topped pitcher plant.

They are also collectible works of art and an easy way for everyone to help support wetland conservation.

Don't forget to Pack these Items

Insect repellent is always a great idea outdoors, especially around any body of water.

We use Permethrin Spray on our clothes before our park trips.  Please read my article on preventing biting insects while enjoying the outdoors.

Sunscreen - I buy environmentally friendly sunscreen whenever possible because you inevitably pull it out at the beach.

Bring your water bottle and plenty of water with you. Plastic water bottles are not sold in the park.

Sunglasses - I always bring sunglasses with me. I personally love Goodr sunglasses because they are lightweight, durable, and have awesome National Park Designs from several National Parks like Joshua Tree, Yellowstone, Hawaii Volcanoes, Acadia, Denali, and more!

Click here to get your National Parks Edition of Goodr Sunglasses!

Binoculars/Spotting Scope - These will help spot birds and wildlife and make them easier to identify. We tend to see waterfowl in the distance, and they are always just a bit too far to identify them without binoculars.

    Birding/Wildlife Viewing

Grand Bay is considered an Important Bird Area (IBA) by the National Audubon Society, with over 250 species of birds identified at Grand Bay National Wildlife Refuge! This is due to the fact that there are several habitat types like the wet pine savanna, tidal salt marsh, shallow bays, and maritime forests.

    Hiking

Savanna Trail Boardwalk - This is an easy 1000-foot out-and-back trail that takes you out to the center of a freshwater marsh.

Oak Grove Birding Trail is a half-mile loop trail south of the refuge's visitor center on Bayou Heron Road. The trail goes through a mixed hardwood forest with excellent birding opportunities, especially in the spring and fall migrations. Popular sightings in the spring include Yellow Warblers, Redstarts, and Scarlet Tanagers.

Savanna Loop Trail - This is a one-mile loop trail by the visitor center that takes you into the pine savanna. Make sure to wear good boots, as these trail conditions can vary due to being in a wet pine savanna environment.
