Nāmakanipaio Campground - Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Nāmakanipaio Campground is the front country campground within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The campground is a couple of miles down the road from the visitor center.

This campground is located off of the Hawaii Belt Road. One thing to know is some of the campsites border up to the Belt Road. If you are camping with kids you may want to pick one of the sites on the other side of the loop for safety.

The campsites are spread around a loop along a grassy field. There is little to no privacy within the campground. There is no bushes or vegetation separating most of the campsites.

Nāmakanipaio Campground -  Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Nāmakanipaio is operated by Hawai'i Volcanoes Lodge Company.

There are no showers within the campground but there are flush toilets and running water in the sinks. We found the bathroom to be really clean and nice.

You will want to be prepared for constantly changing weather and temperatures from the 30s to the 80s depending on the day. Make sure your tent has a great rain flap because this campground is damp!

One really cool option if you want to camp in Hawaii Volcanoes but don't want to pack all of your gear is to rent a tent and camping equipment from Volcano House.

They will set up and take down the following equipment for you!

  • 1 Tent
  • 8-inch air mattress with hotel linens
  • Cooler
  • Lantern
  • 2 camping chairs
