Dwight D Eisenhower Memorial
Dwight D. Eisenhower is best known for commanding the largest seaborne invasion in history at Normandy, France, shaping the modern American presidency, and building the interstate highway system we still drive on today. His contributions to this country led to the dedication of this memorial, and standing here, it is easy to understand why.
The memorial sits along Independence Avenue SW at the base of Capitol Hill, directly across from the Air and Space Museum, and covers four acres of beautifully considered park grounds. Congress authorized it in 1999, Frank Gehry was selected as designer in 2009, and after years of hearings and several rounds of redesign, the doors opened on September 17, 2020.
As visitors walk through the space, they are greeted with three bronze sculptures by Sergey Eylanbekov. The first shows Eisenhower standing with troops the night before the Normandy invasion, a moment of enormous weight. The second places him in the Oval Office surrounded by military and civilian advisors, capturing the balance he constantly had to strike between security and peace. The third is easy to overlook but worth lingering on: a young man from Abilene, Kansas, with no idea what lay ahead. Gehry wanted to trace that entire journey, and those three figures do exactly that.
What impressed me was the thought that went into everything surrounding the memorial. The 96 trees on site all grow in Kansas. The federal buildings that ring the space, Health and Human Services, the Department of Education, the FAA, and the Air and Space Museum itself, all have roots in the Eisenhower administration. The 450-foot woven stainless steel tapestry depicting the Normandy coastline in peacetime ties it all together, a reminder of what he fought for and what he spent his presidency trying to protect.

Dwight D Eisenhower Memorial does not charge an entrance fee! You may need to pay for parking, a shuttle, or for other transportation while visiting the park.

Time Zone - Eastern Time Zone
Pets - Pets are generally excluded from most formal memorials but service animals are allowed in all National Park Service (NPS) facilities and memorial areas.
Cell Service - There is strong cellular service all around Washington DC
Park Hours - The memorial os open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Rangers and volunteers are on duty from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM daily to provide orientation and information about the memorialand to answer visitor questions.
Wi-Fi - N/A
Insect Repellent - Insect repellent is always a great idea when outdoors, especially if you are around any body of water.
We use Permethrin Spray on our clothes before our park trips.
Water Bottle - Make sure to bring your own water bottleand plenty of water with you. Plastic water bottles are not sold in the park.
Parking - Parking can be difficult to find.
There are 1,200 metered parking spaces through the National Mall area provided by the National Park Service.
These parking pay stations accept debit and credit cards. They do not accept cash or coins.
Payment can also be made via the Parkmobile app or website.

There are 300 free parking spaces at Hains Point within East Potomac Park.
Accessible parking spaces are available for vehicles displaying disability parking permits, placards, and vehicle tags. In the areas where a parking fee is being charged visitors will need to pay for the accessible parking spaces.
Motorcycles can park in lots A, B, C areas off of Ohio Drive.
Drones - Drones are not permitted within National Park Sites.

Public Transportation
The DC Metro system, known as the Metro, offers easy access. From the Blue, Orange, or Silver lines, exit at the Federal Triangle station. If you're on the Red line, use Metro Center. Both stations are near the World War I Memorial.
Alternatively, for a more active route, use the Capital Bikeshare service. It offers over 4,500 bikes across the region with several stations near the National Mall. One such station is at 15th Street NW and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, directly across from the World War I Memorial.
