Thunderbird Lodge
If location is everything, then Thunderbird Lodge has an argument for being one of the best places to stay on the entire South Rim of the Grand Canyon.
Tucked directly on the canyon rim in the heart of the Grand Canyon Village Historic District, sandwiched between the iconic El Tovar Hotel and the beloved Bright Angel Lodge, this compact 55-room lodge places you as close to the edge of one of the world's great natural wonders as you can possibly be while still sleeping in a bed.
Step out your door and the Rim Trail is right in front of you. The Bright Angel Trailhead is steps away. Sunrise and sunset from right outside your room are times that most visitors have to drive or take a shuttle to enjoy, and at Thunderbird, they are simply part of the days routine.
It is worth being honest about what Thunderbird Lodge is and what it is not. This is not a grand historic lodge with a soaring lobby and sweeping architectural details.
It was built in 1968 as part of the National Park Service's Mission 66 program, the same post-World War II initiative that produced Yavapai Lodge, designed to meet the surge in visitor demand with clean, efficient, modern accommodations.
The two-story concrete structure is rectilinear and utilitarian by design, and the architects made a deliberate and clever choice in facing that reality by coloring the building's exterior to match the warm canyon rim below it, and by stepping the roofline to echo the layered patterns of the canyon walls themselves. It blends into its extraordinary setting as gracefully as a building of its era and style possibly can.
Canyon-side rooms on the upper floor offer partial canyon views that make the cost of the room feel entirely justified. There is no elevator, no air conditioning in the traditional sense, but evaporative coolers keep rooms comfortable in warmer months.
ADA-accessible rooms are available. The real draw here is not the building itself but where it sits, and understanding the history behind why it was built where it was makes staying here even more interesting.

Room Types
Many of the 55 rooms at Thunderbird Lodge have partial canyon views called canyon side rooms. There are no microwaves in the rooms and rooms are accessed by stairs only as there is no elevator.
Rooms have either
- 1 King Bed
- 2 Queen Beds
- ADA/ Accessible rooms are available

Room Amenities
- Full Bath
- Refrigerator
- Air Conditioning
- Free Parking
- Smoke Free Premises
- Flat Screen Television with Satellite TV
- Telephone
- Hair Dryer
- Coffeemaker
- Safe
- In-room crib
- Rollaway/ extra bed (surcharge)
My Experience Staying in Room 6215 at the Thunderbird Lodge
We stayed in room 6215, a lower level room that had a partial view of the Grand Canyon. The room had all the typical amenities you would expect from a National Park Lodge except we did not have any WiFi during our stay. The room was clean, quiet, and was centrally located to everything.
The Thunderbird Lodge itself does not have a dining room but there is several dining options between the El Tovar and Bright Angle Lodge on either side of the Thunderbird. We really enjoyed our stay here and was a great option to save a few dollars compared to the El Tovar, especially if you are not worried about the Historical signifigance of the lodge.
Overall.I would stay here again, especially if it had a view of the Grand Canyon.

The History of Thunderbird Lodge
Thunderbird Lodge was born out of necessity, and its story is inseparable from the larger story of how the National Park Service tried to keep pace with a country that fell in love with the automobile after World War II.
By the mid-1950s, the South Rim of the Grand Canyon was struggling under the weight of a visitor surge that the existing infrastructure simply could not handle. In 1956, the National Park Service launched Mission 66, an ambitious ten-year program designed to overhaul facilities across the entire park system in time for the agency's 50th anniversary in 1966.
The program called for new roads, visitor centers, and lodging throughout the parks, all designed in a clean, modern aesthetic that reflected the architectural sensibilities of the era rather than the rustic Parkitecture traditions of the lodges that had come before.
At the Grand Canyon, however, Mission 66 faced a specific and serious challenge that had nothing to do with design and everything to do with water.
Development along the South Rim had already stretched the available water supply well beyond its limits, and new construction could not proceed without a new source.
The solution was one of the most remarkable engineering projects in the history of the park: a cross-canyon pipeline that carried water all the way from Roaring Springs on the North Rim, down through the canyon, across the Colorado River, and up to the South Rim.
That pipeline was completed in 1970 and made possible the construction of the new lodging facilities that Mission 66 had envisioned, including both Thunderbird Lodge and its nearly identical neighbor, Kachina Lodge.
Thunderbird Lodge opened in 1968 and was operated by the Fred Harvey Company, which had been managing hospitality at the Grand Canyon since the earliest days of the park.
The Fred Harvey Company was purchased by Xanterra Parks and Resorts in 1968, the same year the lodge opened, and Xanterra continues to operate it today as part of the Grand Canyon National Park Lodges collection.
The name Thunderbird comes from the powerful supernatural bird that figures prominently in the traditions of numerous Native American peoples of the Southwest and the Pacific Northwest, a fitting name for a lodge sitting at the edge of a landscape those same peoples have called sacred for thousands of years.
