South Rim Campground - Black Canyon of the Gunnison {Video}

The South Rim Campground in Black Canyon of Gunnison National Park in Colorado. The campground is located just down from the visitor center and has sites perfect for tents and RVs. 

South Rim Campground

The South Rim Campground is the only Black Canyon of the Gunnison Camping option along the south rim portion of the park. 

Number of Sites: 88

Location in the park: One mile from the South Rim Visitor Center

Campsite Cost: $22 - Standard Electric

$16 Standard non-electric. 

Senior/Access Camping Fee: $ 

Reservations: Yes

Sites Reservable: 56
Sites First Come / First Serve: 32

Latitude/Longitude: 

38° 33' 2.0002" N
107° 41' 12.0001" W

Elevation:  8,000 feet in elevation

Accessible Sites: two designated ADA accessible campsites on the South Rim: A21 and B21.

Pets Allowed: Yes, but there are limitations.

From June 8 to August 13, dogs will be allowed in campsites, but may not be taken on walks (even on a leash), and may not be carried around the South Rim Campground or on the Rim Rock Trail due to potentially aggressive deer protecting their fawns.

Campground Reservations 

Are campground Reservations Available? Yes

In the summer, loops A and B may be reserved through recreation.gov.

In the Spring, Fall, and Winter, all sites are first-come, first-served.

Loop C is always first-come, first-served.

How Far Ahead can you make a reservation? 6 months 

First Come, First Served? First come, first served camping is very limited.

 

Campground Amenities

Dump Station: No

Bear Boxes: Yes

Flush Toilets: no, Vault Toilets

Payphone: payphone is available near the campground

Is wifi available? No

Is cellular Phone Service Available? It may depend on your carrier. We have T-mobile and had service randomly throughout the park. 

Is a camp host available on site? Yes

Is firewood available for purchase? No wood collection or firewood sales in the park.

Amenities at each campsite: 

Fire pit in the site? Yes

Picnic Table in the site? Yes

Bear Box in site/area? Yes

Potable Water? Seasonal, drinking water is only available mid-May through mid-October

 

RV Camping at South Point Campground

RV Length:  Loop B has sites large enough for RVs and trailers (combined length) up to 55 feet.

Most sites in Loop B average about 30 feet.

Sites in Loops A and C can typically fit a 23-foot RV or car/ trailer combined length.

Generators:  Generator use is not permitted.

Hook Ups - Each site in Loop B offers 20, 30, and 50 amp electric hookups.

 

How to get to Campground

The park is located approximately 250 miles SW of Denver.

South Rim: 15 miles east of Montrose, via U.S. Hwy 50 and CO Hwy 347.

The maximum number of people in a campsite: 8

The number of cars per campsite: 2

Checkout time: 1 pm

Quiet Hours: 

Stay Limits: Stay is limited to 14 consecutive nights for a total of 30 days within a calendar year.
